"Be critical of the content, but respect the person"

Since I attended a seminar on listed companies in my student days, financial law has always been a part of me. At the Amsterdam stock exchange and in the years that followed, I was, as a lawyer, part of the major institutes. Since 2003 I mainly assist their clients.

I always have good contact with the lawyers of other parties, I am a connector. We call each other and see if we can make a settlement. My motto "be critical of the content, but always respect the person".

The duty of care of investment firms is a wonderful playground due to its complexity and lack of transparency. You can make case law yourself. For example, I have successfully argued that the judge should look at the development of the value of a particular investment fund to determine the amount of investor damage. The difference between the results of this fund and the actual results in the client's portfolio now partly determine the damage assessment.

Harm Jan played a leading role in the stock lease affair as a consumer lawyer. He was also involved in the creation of several large usury policy settlements. Harm Jan is a member of the Supervisory Board of Schouwburg de Lawei, a member of the board of the association of lawyers in Friesland and a member (vice-chairman) of the Supervisory Board of Stichting Revalidatie Friesland. He teaches at the CPO and is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences. Harm Jan is co-author of the SDU publication Commentary on Financial Law. Harm Jan Tulp is also regularly asked for the television show Kassa, when it comes to current affairs in the field of financial law.

Harm Jan Tulp has worked as a lawyer for more than twenty years. He is a partner at Yspeert.
